The history of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway dates back to the early 1920s. The idea of building a cableway to the summit of Table Mountain was first proposed by a Norwegian engineer named Trygve Stromsoe. The construction of the cableway began in 1926 and took just over two years to complete. The project was undertaken by a Swiss company called Adolf Bleichert & Co. The cableway was designed to carry up to 20 passengers per cabin and would take more than 10 minutes to reach the top.

The original Table Mountain cable car was wooden and carried 20 passengers including the conductor. The cable car in Cape Town was officially opened to the public on the 4th of October 1929 and became an almost immediate top attraction in Cape Town. The cable cars were later replaced with modern ones and were upgraded 3 times in 1958, 1974 and most recently in 1997.

The current Table Mountain cable car was introduced in 1997 and was designed to carry up to 65 passengers per cabin. The new cable cars have an innovative design that rotates as it travels up the mountain, allowing passengers to experience a 360-degree view of the surroundings. The cable cars are equipped with large windows that provide an unobstructed view of the landscape below.

The cable cars are made of lightweight materials and are environmentally friendly. They are powered by electricity and are equipped with a braking system that allows them to operate safely in almost all weather conditions. The new cable cars have been a huge success, and today, the cableway has carried more than 28 million passengers till now.
