The Labia Theatre 🍿
Beloved by locals, The Labia Theatre is the oldest independent cinema in South Africa. It began as an Italian Embassy ballroom opened by Princess Labia who made it a live performance theatre. Passionate creatives took over the establishment and through their passion for film it became an iconic movie cinema. During their ownership, it was a place for avant-garde films and stood against apartheid censorship by showing banned movies.
Due to community crowdfunding, it has remained an icon by screening a diverse collection of films from art-house to mainstream for all movie buffs to enjoy. Zeitz MOCAA 🎨
Located at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is the largest museum dedicated to modern art from Africa and its diaspora. The museum’s dedication to promoting and preserving African art is pushed by its vision to uplift African artists in the 21st century. The building’s architecture shows the abandoned grain silo that stood in the very same spot in the early 1920s, adding character and culture to the building’s design. The 100+ galleries on display feature both temporary and permanent collections.
The central atrium of Zeitz MOCAA highlights the original silo’s concrete grain elevator, carved to pour natural light through the ceiling. It rises over 27 metres high to a network of walkways granting guests a panoramic view of the artwork.
