Born in 1978 in the rural village of Mahlabathini, KwaZulu-Natal, Biyela’s path to winemaking began in the most unlikely circumstances. Her breakthrough came in 1998 when South African Airways offered her a scholarship to study viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University.
