The History of this Magnificent Lighthouse ⛵

The Kommetjie Lighthouse was constructed in response to the numerous shipwrecks that occurred in the area during the early 20th century. The Cape of Good Hope is known for its treacherous waters, with many ships being destroyed by strong currents and unpredictable weather conditions. In 1914, the British Admiralty recommended the construction of a lighthouse in Kommetjie to help prevent these accidents. Construction began in 1916, and the lighthouse was finally opened in 1919. The lighthouse was originally powered by gas, but in 1936, it was converted to electricity.

The lighthouse has played a significant role in the history of Kommetjie and the surrounding area. During World War II, the lighthouse was used as a lookout station by the South African Navy, which was tasked with monitoring enemy ships in the area. Today, the lighthouse is still in operation and is maintained by the South African Maritime Safety Authority.

Architecture and Design of Kommetjie Lighthouse

The Kommetjie Lighthouse is an impressive structure, standing at a height of 33 meters. The tower is constructed from reinforced concrete and is painted white, with a bright red trim around the lantern room. The lantern room is where the light is located, and it features a rotating lens that produces a beam of light that can be seen from up to 40 kilometres away.

Visitors to the Kommetjie Lighthouse can climb the spiral staircase that leads to the top of the tower. The staircase is narrow and steep, but the climb is well worth it for the stunning views of the surrounding area. From the top of the lighthouse, visitors can see the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. On a clear day, you can even see a part of Table Mountain in the distance.
