Self-Drive Namaqualand Tour 🌅

The Namaqualand Region in Northern Cape is globally recognised for its springtime wildflower emergence. It is so well-known Cape Town has a dedicated route to make this experience accessible (as long as you have a car, of course), with its Namaqualand Flower Route that runs up the West coast to Port Nolloth and the Namqua National Park. The best time to visit is around early August or late September! This is a popular botanical tour experience, but you also can do it solo! Just pick up a flower guide at your local bookstore or visit the South African National Parks website for additional information.
Here are some of our tips, though! 👍
- Choose Your Route & Stops 📖 – The Namaqualand Flower Route covers around 600km, so picking your stops is important. Up Cape Town’s N7 branches at Vanrhynsdorp, where you can find the Hantam Botanical Garden just outside of Nieuwoudtville (a popular stop on the route!).
- Accommodation🏨 – Remember to book early, as lodges and guesthouses fill up quickly. Dwarkersbos and Vanrhynsdorp are good towns to seek accommodation in; however, this is up to your discretion and tastes!
- What to Pack🧳 – Springtime on the West Coast can bring chilly mornings, so don’t forget your jackets, but evenings and afternoons can get warmer. Comfortable walking shoes are a must because you’ll be trekking through many flower fields and exploring the designated hiking trails. Lastly, ensure you pack snacks and essentials, as some areas along the route are quite remote!
- Respect the Environment🐐 – Stick to designated paths to avoid damaging the local ecosystems, and definitely avoid picking flowers or feeding critters you may find on the way
- Bring an Adventurous Spirit!🤸 – This trip is bursting with opportunities for fun and flexibility, so follow your curiosities. You may find delicious local cuisine and activities. Due to its remote location, stargazing in Namaqualand is a beautiful sight!
Cape Town’s botanical gardens and tours give travellers unforgettable opportunities with its experiences showcasing South Africa’s rich biodiversity and indigenous flora. Whether you’re looking for luxurious botanical safaris with a wine glass in hand or to take on our natural beauty solo, these botanical tours will fulfil your curiosities. With such a wealth of options to choose from, absorbing the atmosphere of the Cape Floristic Region and our beautiful plant life is easy!
