In collaboration with wine.co.za we would like to introduce the wine of the week: Groote Post Pinch of Salt Chardonnay 2023.
Groote Post Vineyards is a historic, 18th-century farm outside the town of Darling on the Cape West Coast of South Africa. On this farm, winemaking traditions have been revived by the Pentz family. Unique aspects and cool climatic conditions of the Darling Hills yield superlative fruit. The winemaker of Groote Post, Lukas Wentzel, produces the wines to reflect the uniqueness of their vineyards.
The Groote Post Pinch of Salt Chardonnay 2023 is the newest addition to Groote Post’s range of wines. It is made with care from a 9-year-old dryland Chardonnay vineyard on the highest hill of the farm, with a beautiful view of the ocean. Here, the grapes bask in the salty wind and the West Coast sun.
Winemaker Lukas fermented the Pinch of Salt Chardonnay in three different vessels, creating a wine with layers of flavour and depth, just like a pinch of salt brings out the best in every dish. Wentzel’s recipe calls for three pinches: fifty percent stainless steel for a crisp character, thirty percent French oak for richness, and twenty percent clay amphora. This unique blend combines innovation and tradition.
The result of this unique winemaking process is a lightly wooded 2023 vintage showing fresh acidity, minerality, and a zesty structure. On the nose, you’ll smell fresh stone fruit and vibrant citrus notes. The palate reveals a steely minerality with crisp citrus and yellow stone fruit flavours. A long, zesty acidity assures a full and concentrated structure. No extra pinch of nothing is needed.
This wine is the perfect summer companion. It is best paired with simple fish cakes or a light, nutritious salad with a refreshing balsamic vinaigrette.
