The historic village square of Riebeek-Kasteel is preparing to host the much-anticipated Swartland Olive Festival on Saturday, 27 and Sunday, 28 September 2025. This annual event is a vibrant homage to South Africa’s burgeoning olive industry, promising a weekend of tastings, entertainment, and culinary discovery that proves this humble fruit is a national treasure waiting to be fully embraced.
At the heart of the festival is, of course, the olive itself. Seven leading Western Cape producers will gather under one marquee, offering a gastronomic journey through the diverse language of olive flavours. Festival-goers can explore a stunning array of products, from simply brined varieties to complex smoked and sun-dried options, alongside premium extra virgin olive oils. For those new to the scene, it’s the perfect introduction; for seasoned enthusiasts, it’s a veritable treasure trove of taste.
But the experience extends far beyond the fruit in its pure form. Visitors can sample an abundance of olive-based delicacies like tapenade, olive jam, and olive salt. Following in the footsteps of Cleopatra, the festival also highlights the beauty benefits of olives, with a range of face creams, soaps, and foot balms on display -proving that olives are as nourishing for the skin as they are for the palate.
The festival ensures there is something for everyone. Sunday is dedicated to family fun, with magic shows, balloon making, and arts and crafts activities to keep children entertained. Adults can enjoy Mimosas and Bloody Marys for just R50 each, and four lucky Sunday ticket holders will win half a lamb each from Deli-Co Butchery.
The culinary programme is a major highlight, featuring live demonstrations from celebrated chefs. Jenny Morris (the Giggling Gourmet), Pieter Malan of Chef & Co, Cobus Bekker, and Nicole Neethling of Flour & Oil will share tasty, easy-to-recreate recipes that showcase how to incorporate olives into everyday cooking. The entertainment lineup is equally impressive, with chart-topping Afrikaans folk rock duo RAAF performing on both days, alongside The Rivertones reggae band, ensuring the energy remains high throughout the weekend.
The Swartland region, already renowned for revolutionising South African wine, provides the perfect terroir for olive cultivation. The area’s dry land farming conditions create an ideal stress environment for olive trees, resulting in exceptional cultivars that are gaining international recognition. While South Africa currently imports two-thirds of its olive oil, the quality being produced locally signals an incredible potential to flip this ratio.
