The History of Noordhoek Common 🌳
The Common comprises three properties one on the Eastern side, the South-west side, and the North-west side. Walter Huskisson once owned the Eastern side, which also included Shady Oaks and a large milking shed. The road’s realignment in the 1960s cut through Walter’s farm. In the late 1960s, Walter switched from farming to Shady Oaks Caravan Park. The fate of the South-west field’s ownership is uncertain.
The North-west section, across from the forestry station, belonged to the Misses Goodman, who were relatives of Sir Drummond Chaplin. In 1982, John Wiley acquired the estate, transforming it into the De Goede Hoop Estate. As part of the development, he contributed the two Ohio farm fields to the Common. In the early 1980s, the Noordhoek Pony Club and later the Noordhoek Riders Association gained permission to hold shows on the Common, leading to its recognition as an open space for informal sports and dog walking.
