A Brief History of Table Mountain

Before you start your Table Mountain hike, here is a little history to make your journey more meaningful. Dominating Cape Town’s skyline, this iconic peak is rich in cultural, geological, and historical significance. Known as Tafelberg in Afrikaans, Table Mountain is said to be over 260 million years old, making it one of the oldest mountains in the world. Long before Europeans arrived in the Cape, the Khoi and San people lived in and around Table Mountain. To them, this magnificent mountain was sacred as they believed it to be the home of their god (Tsui or Goab). Today, many South Africans continue to see this mountain as having spiritual significance.
The first European known to have set eyes on Table Mountain was Bartolomeu Dias in 1448. And, the first recorded summit of Table Mountain was in 1503 by the Portuguese navigator Admiral Antonio de Saldanha. In the years that followed, hiking this mountain grew in popularity, especially after the opening of the cable car in 1929, which made the summit more accessible to visitors of all fitness levels. Today, Table Mountain is not only a bucket-list item for nature lovers and hikers. It’s a symbol of South Africa – representing its natural beauty, resilience, and heritage.
