The Klein Karoo is overflowing with charming, one-of-a-kind towns, but one stands out so distinctly that it practically begs for a return visit. That town is De Rust, a hidden gem cradled at the foot of the majestic Swartberg Mountain Range.
From the moment we rolled into town and passed the humble sign reading “De Rust welcomes you,” locals greeted us with warm smiles and cheerful waves from passing bakkies. This is the kind of place where strangers become friends in an instant, where hospitality is woven into daily life.

When the sun blazed at its peak, we wandered down the quiet main road and stumbled upon a small café. We stepped inside for a quick refreshment and ended up staying until sunset. Coke bottles clinked as we sipped slowly on the stoep, nibbling on freshly baked koeksisters and flaky Karoo pies, while swapping travel tales with the owner. It felt like stepping into a postcard.
That’s the magic of Karoo culture: slow moments, sincere conversations, and the ever-present aroma of something delicious baking in the background.
True to its name, De Rust, “The Rest”, offered weary travellers a place to pause in the early 1900s. Nestled between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert, it quickly became a favourite stopover for those seeking peace and perspective.
Today, the town buzzes with constant movement as trucks, travellers, and traders pass along the N12 National Road, earning De Rust a new reputation as “the town that never sleeps.” Yet, beneath that bustle, it still offers the same tranquil charm, a place where you can slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with life’s simple pleasures.
Things to Do in De Rust

We arrived in De Rust with no plans; that’s exactly how this charming town invites you to travel. Beyond booking your accommodation, there’s no need for strict schedules or reservations. Instead, you show up, explore, and let the day unfold.
You’ll find plenty to keep you entertained: cosy cafés and homestyle restaurants serving Karoo favourites, quirky curio shops full of local treasures, and unique experiences that capture the laid-back spirit of the region. In De Rust, spontaneity isn’t just welcome; it’s part of the adventure.
De Rustica Olive Estate – Olive Tasting Experience 🫒

If you’ve done wine tasting, you’ll find olive tasting at De Rustica Olive Estate a game-changer. Renowned for producing award-winning olive oils, this estate offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour led by the knowledgeable and incredibly passionate Precilla. She walked us through every step of the process, from raking olives off the branches to processing them into rich, flavorful oils. Watching the oil being separated, filtered, and bottled gave us a whole new appreciation for what goes into every drop.
Precilla didn’t just guide us, she schooled us. We learned that there are three distinct styles of olive oil and that there’s an art to tasting them properly (spoiler: we did it all wrong at first!). But laughter was part of the experience, and learning the correct techniques. Now, thanks to Precilla, we’ll never look at olive oil the same way again, and if you see us sniffing bottles in-store, you’ll know why. Bookings are essential, and tours run Monday to Friday, so plan for this unforgettable experience.

Her energy is infectious, and you can feel her passion for creativity and community in every corner of the store.
