Introducing our Wine of the Week: The Wildekrans Estate Range Cape Blend 2022 is a testament to the estate’s commitment to capturing the essence of its environment.
Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Botrivier Valley, Wildekrans Wine Estate’s 1,000-hectare property is a beacon of exceptional winemaking. Originally established as a mixed farming operation, the estate soon recognised the unique potential of its cool terroir, leading to a shift towards cultivating high-quality grapes. This dedication to excellence has since blossomed into international acclaim for Wildekrans’ wines.
The wine estate is dedicated to sustainable farming practices, ensuring that its rich biodiversity is preserved for future generations. 444 Hectares of the estate are under conservation. Here, the fynbos and other natural vegetation flourishes and provides a home for the native fauna. Wildekrans has been a member of WWF South Africa’s Conservation Champions programme since 2009.
Visitors to Wildekrans can indulge in a variety of experiences, from wine tastings, cellar tours, and dining to adventurous outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, and horse riding. Wildekrans also offers luxury farm accommodation.
Our Wine of the Week, the Wildekrans Estate Range Cape Blend 2022 is a testament to the estate’s commitment to capturing the essence of its environment.
The wine is a red blend of Pinotage ((58%), Shiraz (22%), Cabernet Franc (14%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (6%). It’s rich and inviting on the nose, with a bouquet of sweet berry aromas, ripe plums, and dark fruit. Subtle hints of fynbos and mint add complexity, while a touch of spice rounds out the profile. On the palate, the Cape Blend is beautifully balanced, offering a long, rich finish that echoes the depth of its flavour.
The estate’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes low intervention, allowing the true character of the vine and its terroir to shine through. Under the guidance of winemaker De Wet Viljoen, Wildekrans adheres to the belief that “great wines begin in the vineyard“. De Wet’s approach underscores the importance of terroir, reflecting his view that, much like humans, wines have a place of origin that shapes their personality. This philosophy ensures that each bottle from Wildekrans is not just a wine but a narrative of its origin, crafted to embody the estate’s unique sense of place.
With approximately 70 hectares dedicated to both red and white wine grape varieties, Wildekrans is continuously refining its portfolio to enhance and balance its offerings. The careful alignment of varieties to soil types and meticulous vineyard management contribute to the pronounced structure and fruit intensity of their wines.
The Wildekrans Estate Range Cape Blend stands out as a remarkable example of what can be achieved when meticulous care meets a remarkable terroir. Explore this exceptional wine and experience the distinctive character that defines Wildekrans Wine Estate.
