Our Wine of the Week is the sustainably made Vergenoegd Löw Chardonnay 2023.
Vergenoegd Löw is a 325-year-old wine estate where history, heritage, and harmony converge. Every team member plays an important role in creating an experience steeped in heritage, sustainability, and the excellence of award-winning wines.
This immersive journey begins with a profound reverence for the land and its inhabitants. As a living, evolving national monument, Vergenoegd Löw proudly stands as part of the European Heritage Project and the WWF Conservation Champion Programme. Something that differentiates Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate is its location.
It is one of Stellenbosch’s most strongly maritime-influenced terroirs, nestled on an ancient seabed off the coast of False Bay, less than five kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. The area, with its fertile soil, also has one of the district’s only limestone deposits.
“Our rich shelly limestone deposits bring life to our soils that were previously covered in water,” says Vusi Dalicuba, winemaker at Vergenoegd Löw. “This, combined with our windswept terroir creates elegant wines with notably fine tannin structure, fresh fruit profiles and a hint of saltiness.”
Visit Vergenoegd Löw to discover the uniqueness of their wines for yourself. Vergenoegd Löw’s range of wines can be tasted on the estate in historical venues or under starlit skies. Experts will introduce guests to the range of estate-grown wines that include red blends, a Cap Classique, and white and red single cultivar wines. The wine estate offers three ranges: The Runner Duck Range, Vergenoegd Löw Range, Schloss Frankenberg Range, and Heritage Collection.
Our Wine of the Week is a wine from the well-loved Vergenoegd Löw Range: Vergenoegd Löw Chardonnay 2023.
The estate’s rich, calcareous soils are a great friend to Chardonnay. The Chardonnay grapes are hand-harvested with care in vineyards farmed according to the principles of regenerative agriculture. Winemaker Vusi and his team then handcraft the wine in a way that allows it to express the unique terroir and dedication to excellence in the best possible way.
The Vergenoegd Löw Chardonnay 2023 is restrained and contained, but not shy. It’s a classic and elegant Chardonnay with lemon highlights and lanolin undertones. A gold-coloured wine, butterscotch on the nose is the threshold to slightly tart citrus marmalade on the palate with its pleasing weight and texture. Yellow limes and pineapple waltz you through to a round, soft finish.
This wine calls for languid lunches at a long table piled with typical Provencal fare. A roast succulent free-range chicken and potatoes with a romanesco gratin will partner delightfully with this wine.
