Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girls indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigour of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals.

Herschel Girls School presents this production of Sarah DeLappe’s Pulitzer-nominated Drama.
This gutsy, fast-paced play doesn’t pull any punches. Set in suburban America, it is essentially a coming-of-age story set across six Saturday mornings in the lives of a competitive high school soccer team. In the absence of adults these young women speak freely (and their conversation is not pretty). Their conversation ranges widely, including genocide, boys, love, loss, friendships, menstrual cycles, anxiety, drugs and many other topics. These topics are already presented and consumed on mass by every time we access Netflix or HBO. But, on stage, The Wolves reminds us that we cannot allow ourselves to be desensitized to things like prejudice, sexual pressure or cruelty. Theatre insists that we tackle these issues head-on and forces us to interrogate how we think and feel. The play provides some uncomfortable insights into the underbelly of adolescence and touches on societal issues. These things often seek to divide us, but facing them can also bind us together and make us stronger, and this is a core lesson of the play.
